Electrodes in brain may help depression

Emory University Professor Dr. Helen S. Mayberg imagines a day when people with treatment-resistant depression will find relief through deep brain stimulation.

"This is a brain disease. It isn’t about having a character flaw. This is not about having a bad day,” Mayberg said. "This is a deadly disease that robs you of your vitality and productivity.”

Mayberg is professor of psychiatry and neurology and Dorothy Fuqua Chair in Psychiatric Neuroimaging and Therapeutics at Emory University’s School of Medicine in Atlanta. She has conducted research into depression to determine what part of the brain causes it and how it can be better treated.
